Why are Blacks dying at higher rates from COVID-19?

Response by Natalia Perez

Rashawn Ray’s article, “Why are Blacks dying at higher rates from Covid-19,” explains and demonstrates the causes of why black community is dying from Covid-19 in a higher rate than any other race. The main cause of these higher rates are health disparities which can be based on how communities are raised by.

In which I mean that the black community has “less” resources such as “healthy food options, green spaces, recreational facilities, lighting, and safety.” In addition, many black people do have jobs, such as Ray states, where they can be janitors, food services, bus drivers, retail stores, etc. The aftermath of when the lockdown started caused many of them to lose jobs and having to work through the pandemic to gain some money.

As read from Golash-Boza’s reading, institutional racism is a form of racism where there is any racial inequalities in any institution/organization. It can be shown/set through any political, educational, economical, health, and any more kind of institutions.

In Dr.Ray’s article, he states that criminalization is one of the causes of health disparities which can also be seen as an example of institutional racism. There is a huge imbalance in the criminal system in black communities. It is extremely horrible. Dr.Ray explains a situation where currently, during a pandemic, black men are “coincidentally” getting stopped because they look suspicious from wearing masks. There was even a case where a police officer started to cough on a black person just for their pleasure.

It has been seen many times where police are racially profiling a black person and being rude to them in any kind of way. The criminal system has been a disappointment to the black community as seen throughout the years.

When reading Dr.Ray’s article, the sentence that I think summarized the article was when he stated, “I argue structural conditions that inform pre-existing conditions and health disparities are the main culprit for the epidemic within the pandemic which is ravaging Black communities across the U.S.”

He explains the cause in why the Black community is dying which is all these health disparities because of race and how the different communities are brought up. Because of all these differences such as resources and the health inequalities, it is causing the death rates from Covid-19 in the black community to be so high.

Covid-19 caused a worldwide lockdown which sadly took away jobs that caused chaos in the working class and lower class because it was their source of income. Many of these people are parents or have a family in which they are part of the family’s source of money.

Now, many of these people are having hard times to pay rent or even pay for groceries. Thankfully some of these people got stimulus checks but for some it was not enough to pay for simple things. Many people even got to the point of being close to homelessness because they had no money to pay rent. On the other hand, there are still some people who thankfully still have a job but they had to go through the dangers from Covid-19.

They never knew if they would get Covid or not but they had to get through to have some money as support for themselves or families. Although, compared to wealth people, I would think they had it easier because many would have money saved and still have their jobs and would work from home which is a different complete story for the lower class.

In my experience, as someone who is part of the working-class or lower middle class, Covid-19 has had a huge impact in our family. Although we were not left jobless, my parents are working more than usual (overtime everyday). I was scared that my parents would get Covid-19 but they had to go to work to support the family because if they did not work, we would sadly not be where we are now.

What evidence do you see that both Vivian Bearing and her healthcare providers have been socialized to use the Voice of the Lifeworld and/or the Voice of Medicine?

The story of an English professor, Vivian Bearing, who is diagnosed with terminal ovarian cancer.

The purpose of this paper is to apply your understanding of these topics to the movie Wit (2001), which features The story of an English professor, Vivian Bearing, who is diagnosed with Terminal ovarian cancer. Bearing describes her experiences as a cancer patient and offers her reactions to various health communication interactions during her diagnosis and treatment.

Carefully watch the movie and answer the following questions, using evidence from the texts to support your ideas

1. How does Vivian Bearing’s experience of social support influence her illness experience?

2. How do Vivian Bearing’s experiences with health care providers support the well-documented trends in patient-provider communication (e.g., physician-centered communication, asymmetrical versus transactional communication, etc.)?

3. What evidence do you see that both Vivian Bearing and her healthcare providers have been socialized to use the Voice of the Lifeworld and/or the Voice of Medicine? Does anyone in the movie deviate from the patient and/or health care provider role expectations and if so, how?

4. How does Vivian Bearing’s experience support Nuland’s ideas about how our cultural conceptions surrounding the “beautiful death” cause so many people to die alone?

Paper Requirements
The paper is worth 40 points. Your paper should have a title page formatted according to APA (7th edition) style conventions, which includes the use of a references page. Your paper should be double-spaced with 12-point font and the length of the paper should be no less than 1250 words (somewhere between 5 and 6 double-spaced pages, excluding the title and reference pages).

Suggestions for Writing the Analysis Paper

Greed is Good: The Ethical Appeals of Gordon Gekko

Identify any remarks that make either of the two forms of Ethical Appeal discussed above. Does this speaker establish his practical wisdom, his commitment to principles, and his sense of Altruism?

If so, what does he say to make these qualities apparent?

Does he appear to take account of the values, desires, fears, or prejudices of his particular audience?

Explain how exactly he does that. Make sure you discuss both forms of ethos in your Journal Assignment.

Gordon Gekko’s “Greed is Good” Speech From Wall Street

Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) is a thoroughly corrupt stock market profiteer. He illegally uses insider information and he uses his influence to sabotage various corporations – all in order to take the risk out of his investment schemes. And in his capacity as majority shareholder of Teldar Paper, he is able to manipulate the company in a way that will virtually guarantee that he will make a modest profit.

In this speech, he addresses the other shareholders at their annual meeting where they will vote on any proposed changes to the company. Gekko displays his Rhetorical chops as he discredits the management of the Teldar Paper Corporation in an effort to get the shareholders to fire them. Gekko argues that such a change in high-level personnel will help the failing company to recover and begin to turn a profit. But in reality, this is the last thing in the world that Gekko wants.

He was able to buy a controlling interest in the company relatively cheaply because it was failing. But he never planned to make it succeed. Instead, he plans to drive the company even further into failure so that it will be forced to shut down. At that point, Gekko plans to break it up and sell off the different divisions of it to other companies. Eliminating the experienced leadership from the company will ultimately hurt it, which is exactly what Gekko really wants. He’s willing to betray the interests of all the other shareholders and all of the employees of Teldar Paper in order to get what he wants.

How interesting that such a thoroughly unethical character manages to deploy brilliantly effective ethical appeals in his rhetoric!

Gekko:

Well,  appreciate the opportunity you’re giving me, Mr. Cromwell, as the single largest shareholder in Teldar Paper, to speak.

Well, ladies and gentlemen, we’re not here to indulge in fantasy, but in political and economic reality. America, America has become a second-rate power. Its trade deficit and its fiscal deficit are at nightmare proportions. Now, in the days of the free market, when our country was a top industrial power, there was accountability to the stockholder. The Carnegies, the Mellons, the men that built this great industrial empire, made sure of it because it was their money at stake.

Today, management has no stake in the company! All together, these men sitting up here [Teldar management] own less than 3 percent of the
company. And where does Mr. Cromwell put his million-dollar salary? Not in Teldar stock; he owns less than 1 percent. You own the company. That’s right — you, the stockholder. And you are all being royally screwed over by these, these bureaucrats, with their steak lunches, their hunting and fishing trips, their corporate jets and golden parachutes.

Cromwell (CEO of Teldar Paper):Gekko

Teldar Paper, Mr. Cromwell, Teldar Paper has 33 different vice presidents, each earning over 200 thousand dollars a year. Now, have spent the last two months analyzing what all these guys do, and still can’t figure it out.

One thing do know is that our paper company lost 110 million dollars last year, andbet that half of that was spent in all the paperwork going back and forth between all these vice presidents.

The new law of evolution in corporate America seems to be survival of the unfittest. Well, in my book you either do it right or you get eliminated. In the last seven deals that been involved with, there were 2.5 million stockholders who have made a pretax profit of 12 billion dollars.

[The audience of shareholders applauds enthusiastically]

Greed is right. Greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms — greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge — has marked the upward surge of mankind.

And greed — you mark my words — will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA. Thank you very much.

Discuss the costs and benefits associated with these ideas using two or more selections.

1. Every story and essay in this section of the class deals with the conflict between the real and the ideal. Compare/contrast three of the selections and specifically look at how the characters handle the problems and challenges associated with their identities and situations.

2. Many of these stories and essays are focused on the way American society welcomes or excludes the various Ethnicity that make up our country. Choose three of them and discuss how their characters handle these difficulties.

3. From our laws to our social/moral code, it can be argued that America is obsessed with both the notions of exceptionalism and equality.

Discuss the costs and benefits associated with these ideas using two or more selections.

You are also required to use one outside source to provide additional support for your argument.

Remember that you must include all sources in your works cited page as well as Parenthetically cite them where they appear in your paper.

Describe how your project will improve services or outcomes and distinguish the organization from their competitors.

Innovative Healthcare Initiative

Your Business Case Plan should be based on the information that you learn within your clinical facility. Be sure to review the mission, vision, and values to understand the organizations purpose and culture. Based on your interpretation of the organization, what opportunities have you discerned that could improve their services?

Remember, you are not writing a BCP for a board of directors; that would take more time and resources than we have at our disposal and exceeds the boundaries of this course.

However, you are expected to follow the outline of the BCP and provide the required elements as outlined in the assignment instructions and grading rubric.

See the Course Schedule for the due date. Follow the guidelines below to complete your Business Case Plan.

Review the Business Case Plan Rubric [DOCX] for grading criteria and guidelines for creating your plan.
Use the following headings in your plan:

Executive summary

The primary purpose of the executive summary, the first section of the BPC, is to provide a condensed overview of the main document and capture the attention of the reader(s), and key stakeholder(s)

While the executive summary is the first section of a BCP, it should be written after you complete the other sections; remember it summarizes the entire presentation.

Define the Proposal
The purpose of this should be enumerated in three subsections:

1) Provide a factual summary of the current situation or environment;

2) Provide a clear analysis of the problem; and

3) Identify the solution. It is important to provide the reader with a clear picture of why you are making this proposal and then to help them understand the problem.

It is vitally important to align the organization’s mission, vision, and goals with your proposal

Clearly portray your solution to the problem through a relatively succinct description

Describe how your project will improve services or outcomes and distinguish the organization from their competitors.

Presentation of Options

This section focuses on brainstorming ideas and identifying alternative solutions to address and resolve the identified problem.; you are presenting the reader with options.

At a minimum, present the reader with two additional options to counterbalance the proposed option.

If one of your choices includes a status quo option, one that requires no change from the current situation, it is important to connect the consequences of doing so with the organization and how it will or will not address the problem being faced.

Market Analysis and Opportunity

This section will focus on the environment in which you plan to establish and grow your proposed idea(s) if approved. The market analysis may be internal (within your organization) or external (within the community environment).

Most nursing proposals are based upon inter-organizational (internal) analysis rather than external analysis.

Goals and Objectives

Consider what it is that you want to accomplish with this proposal Clearly describe your expectations for success and how that success will be identified and measured for key stakeholders.

Goals are generally broad and long-term as they determine the direction that you want to take.

Objectives are more detailed and define the specific, measurable actions that must be taken to achieve the overall goal.

It is important that goals and objectives are written in specific, measurable, and time-bound terms.

You may have multiple objectives that support the achievement of one goal.
Performance measures are the strategies that define the how, the actions, taken to meet identified objectives. They quantitatively assess each objective.

Each objective may have one or more performance measures that are used to determine if the objective has been achieved or not.

Implementation Plan and Timeline

Building on the identified goals and objectives, it is important to develop a detailed implementation plan that includes important milestones and deliverables with expected dates of completion.

Follow up any narrative descriptions of the implementation plan with a table to illustrate data

Key stakeholders will need to understand the resources required to implement the project in terms of financial, physical, and human capital support

Evaluation of the Program

This section will describe the evaluation plan for on-going assessment, measurement, and assurance of quality outcomes.
Performance measures should include both financial and service outcomes in their metrics for measurement and align with established goals and objectives for the proposal.

Financial Data and Projections

In this section you will need to provide a comprehensive financial picture of the project with budgetary assumptions and performance expectations clearly outlined.

In nursing, the BCP is typically focused on services, interdepartmental improvements or changes. As such, the financial analysis for the interdepartmental proposal has focused on expected revenue in the form of improved reimbursement or expanded service lines.

Projected costs of the proposed project- renovation of physical space, equipment, and salaries are offset by cost savings in decreased overtime or premium pay or better reimbursement rates.

This information will help you and your key stakeholders to decide if your proposal is worth initiating, or if you need to reevaluate key assumptions. It is important to prepare projections that both realistic and inclusive, but also account for any known financial risks.

Identify Risks Key stakeholders and decision makers will be looking for a comprehensive analysis of risk that addresses three aspects:

1) a detailed discussion of risks related to the identified problem as noted in the Proposal section,

2) a detailed discussion of risk as they relate to each of the identified options noted in the Presentation of Options section, and

3) describe risks in terms of proceeding or not proceeding with your proposal. Risks should be described in easy to define terms and address the likelihood of their occurrence.
Consider threats and opportunities that you identified in the Market

Analysis and provide a discussion of them here.
Benefits can be defined as savings in terms of revenue, productivity, and improved reimbursement rates that are the result of improving outcomes and achieving greater efficiency in processes.

Recommendation – Based on the financial analysis, present your final recommendation and explain your rationale. Highlight the benefits and costs involved and point out how the recommended solution clearly demonstrates the greatest ROI
Include a table to summarize financial information

Summary/conclusion

Emphasize the crucial parts of your BCP that you want key stakeholders and decision-makers to remember after the presentation.

This is a persuasive argument, your last chance to sell your idea and convince them that your proposal has merit and should be approved.

Highlight the strengths of the proposal and critical points.

Review the problem in terms of why the proposal is so important.

Remind them of the possible solutions and the benefits and risks of each.
Point out the return of investment highlighting why your proposal is the most efficient, effective option for the organization.

Lastly, based on the information presented state your final recommendation.

Note: When using tables you may include them as an addendum so as not to exceed the page limit.

Identify the role that individuals within organizations hold in relation to the successful planning and implementation of interventions.

The application of applied behavior analysis (ABA) in organizations.

In this assignment, you will play the role of a behavior-consulting intern. You are working as a behavior consulting intern for Acme, Inc. Your company is taking on a new client, Shoreside Community-Based Residential Facility. You will prepare a presentation consisting of a narrated Power Point addressing the following scenario.

Scenario: Shoreside Community-Based Residential FacilityShoreside would like your company to provide consultation in their unit for adults with traumatic brain injury. Shoreside management and staff have expressed a concern over increasing rates of disruptive behavior during community outings and have had little success with their current interventions. They believe they may need assistance with staff training and behavior management Techniques. The company uses some Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with their clients but has never used ABA at an organizational level. The Director recently learned about Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) and wants to know more about how basic concepts of ABA could be used at Shoreside. The Director of Shoreside believes this would be an effective way to address the problems within the organization. You have been tasked with conducting a preliminary assessment using the first few steps of the problem-solving model: Pinpointing and Measurement, as well as providing an overview of what the process will look like at Shoreside. Your manager has asked you to make a presentation to management and staff to provide more information about OBM and how fundamental principles of behavior can be used in the organization. Additionally, Shoreside is skeptical that the same principles they use with their clients could be applied to staff within the organization.

Using what you have learned about OBM and fundamental principles of behavior, you must create a narrated PowerPoint presentation (minimum of 12 slides) consisting of the following:

Provide an overview of Organizational Behavior Management (OBM):

Define and describe OBM.
Identify and describe at least one specific application of OBM that is applicable to the above organization.
Provide an overview of the problem-solving process:

Describe the steps of a behavior analytic problem-solving model for organizations.

Identify the role that individuals within organizations hold in relation to the successful planning and implementation of interventions.

Describe how problems are prioritized and addressed.

Define and describe fundamental principles of behavior and provide

examples of how this is applied on an organizational level. Use non-technical language, when possible, so that all those attending the meeting understand your discussion:

Reinforcement and punishment
Define positive and negative reinforcement and punishment.
Provide general examples illustrating the principles.
Utilize the ABC Model and conduct a PIC/NIC analysis for one behavior using the following information from an observation at shoreside:

re with 2 staff members and a group leader. One client started engaging in grabbing items off the shelf and yelling. Staff member #1 immediately yelled at the client, which is not the correct protocol reviewed by the behavior analyst prior to the outing. The Group Leader saw this and then turned away and began talking to Staff member #2. Staff member #2 gave attention to another client for asking to look at items before picking them up. The Group Leader was observed to be holding his phone and scrolling through social media throughout the remainder of the outing.

ABC (PIC/NIC) Analysis
Provide one example of a PIC/NIC analysis for Shoreside utilizing the following table in your presentation to organize the information.
Antecedents

Consequence

P/N

I/F

C/U

The problem performance (occurring now): List the staff behavior for change here

The desired performance: List the desired staff behavior here

Reinforcement and Punishment
Describe the result of the PIC/NIC analysis.
Discuss the roles of positive and negative reinforcement.
5. Identify 1 pinpoint for change at Shoreside and identify the measurement to be used.

Include an operational definition for the staff behavior to be changed.
Describe how behavior will be measured by selecting a measurement type, i.e., frequency, duration, and how the data will be collected.
6. Introduce the next steps in the problem-solving process:

Provide a general overview of the problem-solving process
Include a research question related to a potential intervention based on the pinpoint identified.
Describe why using a behavior analytic approach on all levels of the organization is preferred over a non-scientific approach and how the principles of ABA can be used to improve performance in organizations.
Narrated Power Point:

Create a 5–10-minute presentation by narrating your Power Point slides. Your narration should share key ideas expanding on the bullet points located on each of your Power Point slides.
Write your speaking points from your narration of your presentation in the notes section for each corresponding slide.
Draw from the course material and briefly elaborate on the concepts covered in each slide.
Presentation should be a high quality and professional presentation that would be presented by a behavior analyst in the given scenario.
Your PowerPoint presentation should have an APA Style title page and reference page. The sources of the information used in the preparation of your presentation should be cited with in-text citations in APA Style and should be reflected on your reference page.

Your PowerPoint should be a minimum of 12 slides in length, not including title and reference pages, include proper APA formatting (including properly formatted headings for each section of your plan), and include at least two academic references (including your course text)
