Discussion

Imagine that you enter the copy room in your office building, and a 20-something coworker is pacing back and forth in front of the photocopier and pulling at her hair in an agitated manner. She is mumbling “Don’t, don’t” and “protect my soul.” She looks at you and says, “Protect your soul.” You glean from the exchange that she perceives the photocopier takes people’s souls. Delusions like this—in other words, beliefs outside the realm of reality that persist despite evidence to the contrary—signify psychosis.

Hallucinations, meaning seeing or hearing things that others do not, are also part of psychosis These psychotic symptoms are also associated with schizophrenia, a serious mental health issue characterized by loss of contact with reality. It may be difficult to reason with someone in this state. So, what do you do?

In this Discussion, you explore schizophrenia further by imagining your reaction to someone experiencing auditory hallucinations.

To Prepare

Review your course announcements for possible information related to this week’s Discussion and Assignment.

Review the videos on schizophrenia and auditory hallucinations.

Scholarship essay

Write a 300-500-word essay that can be used to apply for scholarships both now and in the future. Note: Your instructor may assign a separate peer review activity to help you with this project.

To complete this assignment, do the following:

Learn about scholarships:

Read the Park University Scholarship Information Guide. Pay close attention to the “Your Personal Statement” section.

Explore the U. S. Department of Education’s Types of Aid and Avoiding Scams pages.

Explore the U. S. Department of Labor’s Scholarship Finder page and find at least one scholarship you qualify for.

Log into Park’s Endowed Scholarship page and see if any internal scholarships are available to you at this time.

Select one scholarship that you will “target” in your personal statement.

Compose a 300-500-word personal statement:

Introduce yourself. Keep it real: talk about your background, your personal and career aspirations, your major, your extracurricular activities, and why you are attending college.

Explain why you are qualified for this scholarship. Mention the name of the scholarship in your statement. What makes you the best candidate for this scholarship?

Explain how this scholarship will help you achieve your educational, professional, civic, and/or personal goals. What will this scholarship allow you to do that you wouldn’t be able to do otherwise?

How will this scholarship allow you to give back to your community?

Be as specific as possible. Set yourself apart from the pack. What makes you unique?

Consider mentioning your FOCUS results and/or your VARK learning preferences.

Write your letter like a story, not a shopping list. Tell your story in a way that will make your reader want to know more.

Think of your letter as the equivalent for a face-to-face interview. Use an appropriate tone, represent yourself professionally, proofread, etc.

Participate in peer review activities, if assigned:

Specific instructions will be provided by your instructor.

Revise your personal statement:

Start with organization. Is your personal statement structured in a way that makes sense? Does your personal statement have a beginning, middle, and end?

Think about focus. Is your statement focused on a single main idea? Does your personal statement provide a single dominant impression?

Consider development. Are each of your ideas, claims, points, and arguments fully fleshed out? Will your reader have questions?

Finally, look at mechanics: diction (word choice), syntax (sentence structure), punctuation, tone, spelling.

Week 5 discussion question file

This discussion will focus on meeting with your IB and talking about this week’s content with them. It will be fun and interesting (in my humble opinion – ha) to get to know everyone else’s IB and get to hear just a little bit about each of their experiences. You can explain concepts to them, you both could look through Hofstede’s country comparison website together (see lecture notes for details) or could even take some of the self-assessments found in Chapter 3 of your textbook. You can compare and contrast where you individually fall on the different dimensions and where the culture with which you identify falls.

For this post,  pick at least 2 specific concepts from this week to discuss with your IB (or another person from a different culture if your IB is not available). Then in your discussion post, complete the following:

1. Tell us which country/culture your conversational partner was from

2. Tell us 2 of the concepts you discussed and how your partner/ their culture connects with each concept – you can also explain how you/your culture connects with each. Also provide at least 2 examples for each connection (e.g. high power distance because clan leaders make decisions for individual families). To clarify, there should be at least 4 specific examples explained in this section. Be specific and elaborate.

3. Provide at least 2 other insights that was brought to light through the discussion. It could be other interesting facts you learned about your IB/their culture that don’t directly relate to this week’s material, it could be questions that you now have that you are seeking answers to, it could be things you realized about yourself or your experiences through this meeting.

This post should be a minimum of 3 paragraphs.
