This week we will explore how the major institutions of our society came into being alongside and through the development of colonialism. We’ll see how the capitalist economy, the modern state, and the international balance of power are all products of colonialism.

Together, we’ll reflect on what it means for us to live in an international order that is built on a foundation of land theft, slavery, coercion, and genocide, and how this shapes our lives today.

Have you learned much about colonialism before? Why or why not? How do this week’s materials relate to what you’ve learned previously? How does it make you feel delving into all of this? What parts make you feel uncomfortable? What parts make you feel excited?

What is a technological support you might provide to help them (could involve a computer, computer program, phone, iPad, etc.)?

Visual report

PURPOSE:

When we begin to think about ways to provide supports to students with disabilities we can quickly get overwhelmed. We often “overthink” what supports might be needed. For example, many educators will create elaborate, color-coded, laminated charts for students to help them stay on task or select reinforcers. While these are totally fine (as long as they are age appropriate), always start small. Can just create a post-it they can point to for the reinforcer they choose (e.g., library time, computer)? Can  simply have a post-it with the question staying on task right now?YES or NO” and point to it as walk around the room. Can  provide a written schedule they can put in a notebook instead of a giant visual schedule with pictures that needs to be placed on a wall with velcro? Can put a reminder in their phone? Sometimes the answer is need the big elaborate support” and that isTOTALLY FINE.But hope this helps you think about different ways of supporting students. Ways that are more socially appropriate or don’t require so much planning and preparation on your end are ideal.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Respond to the following prompts. See rubric for scoring and specific items to include.

(1 paragraph minimum)

1. Think back to your own high school experience. If you were sitting through an IEP meeting with your parents about your future what would you find challenging about the meeting? What would you feel? (memes are encouraged) What supports might you need to participate? Get specific.

(1 paragraph minimum)

2. Some students we work with have complex communication needs (they might not use verbal speech, might use an augmentative and alternative communication device, might use images for comprehension instead of written text) or extreme behaviors.

We often think of these students as not being able to participate in the IEP process because they have challenges self-managing their behavior or aren’t able to communicate with IEP teams in traditional ways.

Post a visual support (develop on your own or find an existing support on the web) that might help a high school student with these challenges (you can choose behavior or communication challenges) to participate in an IEP meeting.

Think critically to discuss how it will be used, how it is socially appropriate, and which IEP steps it would support them through.

What is a technological support you might provide to help them (could involve a computer, computer program, phone, iPad, etc.)?

Think critically to identify how it will be used, how it is socially appropriate, and which IEP steps it would support them through.

Exclamation point.

This week’s technology alert activity is more about using the web to find resources than creating something.

Find and post a resource (e.g., website, blog, podcast, video) about self-determination.

Make sure to tell us why you selected the resource and how it might be helpful for other colleagues. If you want to get real wild you can speak to why self-determination is important for ALL students.

What was the significance of the Statute of Winchester, enacted in 1285?.Why is Sir Robert Peel an important person in our study of community policing?

Evolution of Canadian Policing

.• The role of the police in Canadian history differs from that of the United States, where police were often brought in to re-establish order.• Before Confederation in 1867, each region of the country had its own policing arrange-ments, depending on the size of the settlements, the characteristics of the population, and the specific needs of communities.• The mandate of early municipal police forces covered three main tasks:(1) policing con-flicts between labourers and business owners; (2) maintaining moral standards by enforcing laws against drunkenness, prostitution, and gambling, and(3) apprehending criminals.• The provincial police forces created in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba expe-rienced a number of difficulties. By the late 1920s these provincial forces had been replaced by the RCMP. In BC, the provincial police were replaced by the RCMP in 1950.• The RCMP, originally known as the North-West Mounted Police, was created in 1873 primarily to maintain law and order and ensure the orderly settlement of the previ-ously unpoliced and sparsely settled northwest territory.• The early 1900s to 1970 was the “professional era of policing,” during which efforts were made to increase the control and efficiency of the police.• Women have always been involved in policing, but it was not until 1974 that they began serving as front-line operational officers in Canada.• History plays a role in how communities see themselves and how they interact with the police.Self-EvaluationQuestions

How much of a role can/should the government play in new technology, and ethically, what are the rights of people to privacy when choosing new technology?

Each advance in technology brings with it moral questions about its application in the modern world. The ability of police and other agencies to monitor what were once private conversations and communications raises serious ethical questions about the right to privacy and the government’s “need to know.” Information Technology and Moral Values (https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/it-moral-values/) explores the relationship between morality and modern technologies (Sullins, 2012). In this discussion, provide the framework for an ethical policy that protects privacy while ensuring security.

What are the most important protections from the Bill of Rights to be afforded to modern technological communications?

Guided Response: Whenever examining technology issues in criminal justice, always consider how to improve the system. When there are Technological advances, security concerns are often paramount.
