Reading Discussion

Descartes’s Meditations on First Philosophy is one of the most important texts in the history of Western Philosophy, and now you have interacted with it.

For this week’s discussion forum want you to write a paragraph on “the wax example” that Descartes writes about at the end of the Second Meditation. want you to interpret and analyze that part of the text.

Describe what you think is going on with the wax example and answer whether you think it makes sense. In other words, analyze and critique this example in light of what Descartes is doing in the first and second meditations.

As always, only draw from the text and my lectures (and my secondary source, FD, if you are using it). Remember one of the points is for you to engage your own cogito. Also, as  sure you all know, most of what is on the internet is useless and wrong.

My professor doesn’t want his students to use outside sources for this assignments only his notes. added the readings he wants us to use on the Additional Materials.

What do you hope to learn in this class? Why do you think that learning about moral philosophy would help you? What do you think you will need to succeed? In what ways do you expect you will need knowledge of moral philosophy and/or moral decision-making skills in your future studies and career?

Class Introductions

Introduce yourself to the class by posting a short essay on the D2L Discussion Forum “Discussion Assignment 1 – Introductions.”

Then, respond substantively to at least two introductory posts made by other students in the class.

Guidelines: write 3-4 paragraphs (around 250-300 words) about yourself as an introduction to the other course participants. You can choose to reveal as much or as little information about yourself as you like, but please address at least the following questions:

What is your name

What is your major? Business Administration

tell us something about yourself that is important to you and to who you are (this could be anything from a hobby to a job, favorite sports team, role as a parent, etc.).

What do you hope to learn in this class? Why do you think that learning about moral philosophy would help you? What do you think you will need to succeed?

In what ways do you expect you will need knowledge of moral philosophy and/or moral decision-making skills in your future studies and career?

Have you encountered situations outside of class in which you had to make a tough moral choice? What were some relevant considerations in making that choice?

Is there anything about philosophy that you dread or find difficult?

Have you taken an online class before? If so, what did you like or dislike about it? If not, is there anything that makes you nervous or worried about taking an online class, or any area in which you anticipate problems? Yes

For the two responses: write 1-2 paragraphs (75-150 words) in response to the introductory posts of at least two members of the class. You can respond to any part of their post, but please read the important message following the guidelines.

You might have in common with one of the posters that you both love dogs. Or maybe you and another poster love to travel, so why not write about that? Maybe you and another course participant both support the same baseball team, etc. (Just write two vague responses and tweak them to the posts.)

Summarize and examine one instance of Socrates’ use of his method. Select your example from this list:

The Socratic Method

At the outset of his defense Socrates makes a curious remark: “One thing do ask and beg of you, gentlemen: if you hear me making my defense in the same kind of language as am accustomed to use in the market place by the bankers’ tables, where many of you have heard me, and elsewhere, do not be surprised or create a disturbance on that account.”

What makes the remark curious is that Socrates states that he will not be following the standard procedure for trials of this type, which would be for each of the two sides to hire someone to write a speech and then hire someone to give that speech—the jury would then make its decision based on the speeches and their delivery.

Instead, Socrates will use his “accustomed” method, namely that of asking questions and searching for contradictions in beliefs. This technique has come to be known as the “Socratic Method.”

Craft a post in which you summarize and examine one instance of Socrates’ use of his method. Select your example from this list:

Meletus on the charge of corrupting the youth, starting with “Let this suffice…

Meletus on the charge of corrupting the youth starting with “And by Zeus…”

Meletus on the charge of not believing in the gods starting with “And so, men of Athens…”

Explain how the trial of Socrates and the “Allegory of the Cave” are both examinations of the same idea: that the “unexamined life is not worth living.”

Allegory of the Cave

The “Allegory of the Cave” is a famous section of Plato’s dialogue Republic. It’s called an allegory because nearly every aspect of the story is deeply symbolic.

The Sun, for example, represents the Form of the Good (and among later Christian thinkers, it represents God). But, as you saw from the animated video, it is also a story of how one moves from accepting beliefs without question to a critical examination of those beliefs.

It is a story of moving from ignorance to knowledge, of moving from the world of the senses to the realm of thought. It is a story of the liberation of the mind.

Craft your post in which you explain how the trial of Socrates and the “Allegory of the Cave” are both examinations of the same idea: that the “unexamined life is not worth living.”

In your explanation be sure to touch on specific elements of the “Allegory of the Cave” and of the trial of Socrates.

What health care technology is involved in the situation? What moral guidelines for using that kind of healthcare technology should be used there? Explore such guidelines also using utilitarianism, Kantian deontology, ethical egoism, or social contract ethics.

Show You Care
Develop, in detail, a situation in which a health care worker might be confronted with ethical problems related to patients and prescription drug use OR patients in a state of poverty.

Your scenario must be original to you and this assignment. It cannot be from the discussion boards in this class or any other previous forum.

Articulate (and then assess) the ethical solutions that can found using “care” (care-based ethics) and “rights” ethics to those problems.

Assessment must ask if the solutions are flawed, practicable, persuasive, etc.

What health care technology is involved in the situation? What moral guidelines for using that kind of healthcare technology should be used there? Explore such guidelines also using utilitarianism, Kantian deontology, ethical egoism, or social contract ethics.

Say how social technologies such as blogs, crowdfunding, online encyclopedias can be used in either case.

What moral guidelines for using that kind of healthcare technology should be used there?

Develop such guidelines also using utilitarianism, Kantian deontology, ethical egoism, or social contract ethics.

You should not be using any text you used in a discussion board or assignment for this class or any previous class.

Cite the textbook and incorporate outside sources, including citations.
