Iliads
In your Discussion Post this week, like you to discuss what you consider an important theme or literary device in The Iliad, referencing this week’s readings (Books 7-12 though of course you can also reference Books 1-6). For example, you might write about any of the following:
Themes (certainly not an exhaustive list)
the guest/host relationship (xenia)
honor (timé)
hubris
moira (fate)
penthos (suffering)
kleos (glory/fame)
menis (rage)
Divine intervention (or meddling) in human affairs
Devices (again, not exhaustive)
Epic similes
Epithets
The long and formal speeches
genealogies/lineages
Changes in scene (Greek camp, Troy, Olympus, etc.)
Be detailed in supporting your observations and/or claims; in general, you want to back up your assertions with brief citations and summaries and with clear reasoning.
