After viewing the video on positive psychology, weigh in on the following: Should abnormal psychology continue its focus on identifying the causes of psychological distress, classifying different symptoms and seeking effective treatment to reduce these symptoms, or should the field focus on improving knowledge of what goes right in happy people and trying to improve these techniques in the general population? If you were to start a society from scratch and wanted to improve the lives of its members, would you focus on identifying what goes right in people or on identifying the abnormal? How would approaches to treatment and intervention differ if society were to focus on positive psychology instead of abnormal psychology?

Watch a film from the list below that depicts a psychological disorder.

In your paper, you must a) provide a comprehensive description of the specific disorder and symptoms; b) discuss the character’s (or characters’, when relevant) treatment, diagnosis, and prognosis, or discuss why no treatment or diagnosis was given; c) focus on the messages that this movie sends about this disorder or condition; and d) interpret the accuracy of this film, in light of what you have learned about psychopathology. Each section, “a” through “d’” should be very detailed, at least one full page each. Each section should also have its own subheading, for clear organization of the paper.

Research, compare, contrast, and analyze how individuals from different groups (gender, race, class) may be treated differently by the mental health system.

Research and identify recommended evidence-based treatments that may work equally well for individuals from these different groups and analyze your findings.

Should identified treatments take the demographic characteristics of a client into account, why or why not? Be sure to also identify and discuss what criteria are specified for identification of an evidence-based treatment.

Identify and analyze how the gender or race of a therapist matters in the process of diagnosis, treatment, or type of assessment instruments used.

Research and identify what differences gender, race, and class make in the overall treatment process; if there is a difference, discuss why.
