This assignment provides you an opportunity to

To experience a classical music or jazz concert in person, perhaps for the first time.

To listen to the concert as an informed music critic.

To write an effective summary and critique of the performance.

Directions

Attend one classical or jazz concert from the concert list. see the concert list in the Announcement from your instructor distributed during the second week of the course. You must ask for approval from me if you would like to go to the concert that is not on the attached list.

Try to find information about the program in advance, review the reading materials and try to understand the music pieces before attending the concert.

After the concert, write a 2-3 page report describing your experience in a concert environment and analysis of the individual pieces. Be sure to include the following:

The name of the performer (or conductor for a large ensemble) and the concert program name (if applicable).

The name and a brief description of the venue.

The title and the name of the composer of each piece.

A brief description of each piece using appropriate musical terminology.

A brief description of your reaction to each piece.

Describe anything you noticed about the way the performers played/sang the music:How were they developed?

Concert reports must include:

Name of ensemble/s performing
Academic English, with proper grammar.

Write about:

The type of ensemble(s) you listened to.

The numbers and types of instruments or voices used

Audience etiquette –When did people clap? Did they scream or cheer on the performers or were they quiet?

Performance style:

Describe anything you noticed about the way the performers played/sang the music.

Use musical terminology to describe the music such as: melody, harmony, dynamics, texture, and rhythm.

Did the composer use motives or short, melodic ideas?

How were they developed? Were they expanded, shortened, or moved around to different keys?

Describe how the music made you feel or what it made you think of.

Did it make you think of a scene or story?

Which piece did you enjoy the most? Why? ( use musical terminology in your answers)

Which piece did you enjoy the least? Why?

Did you have a favorite group or soloist?
