Movie Critique Paper

Human services professionals violating many of the established codes of ethical conduct. For many beginning helping professionals, these movies can lead them into thinking that the behavior demonstrated on film is accepted and appropriate. In addition, future clients also watch these movies and this is where they get many of their ideas about professional helpers.

Directions:

Choose ONE movies from the following list:

Prime (PG-13, 2005) (Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman)

What About Bob (PG, 1991) (Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss)

Good Will Hunting (R, 1998) (Robin Williams and Matt Damon)

Watch the movie and identify at least five (5) ethical violations. Use both the NASW and NOHS code of ethics to determine what ethical violations have been committed.

Explain each ethical violation and state which NASW and/or NOHS code of ethics have been violated.

It is recommended that you read through both the NASW and NOHS codes before you watch the movie. Have the codes handy during the film so that you can keep track of the ethical violations.

The papers will be typed, double-spaced with a font no larger than 12. Each paper will be between 3-5 pages.

Identify the steps you took to identify a funding source, describe in as much detail as is available the parameters of the grant, and evaluate the fit between your project’s needs and the grant’s target.

Identifying a Funding Source – Grant writing
In this assignment, research the funding sites given in this and previous units to find a source that might fund your project.

Provide specific details on the funding source, including the name, type (public or private), affiliations, mission, amount of grant, list of requirements, and eligibility.

You may not find all this information (especially for non-government grants) on the grant search sites.

You may need to search the Internet for information on the organization.

It is always best to know as much as you can about the funding sources before applying.

In a 2–4 page paper, identify the steps you took to identify a funding source, describe in as much detail as is available the parameters of the grant, and evaluate the fit between your project’s needs and the grant’s target.

Finally, evaluate whether there are any potential ethical issues between the grant’s parameters and requirements and the NASW code of ethics.

Consider where these factors align, but also where they diverge. Use scholarly sources to back your arguments regarding fit.

Explain why you chose those specific standards. For example, the most recently revised Code contains information on texting clients, electronic communication, Facebook, etc., which may present ethical issues for social workers who use social media.

In your own words, define the term ethical “gray area.” For each of the two challenges you identified above, given an example of an ethical “gray area,” and develop at least one recommendation for how a social worker might handle such a situation.

Discuss how your personal ethical values compare and contrast with the NASW Code of Ethics that you are required to follow as a professional?

Finally, locate the website for the Social Work Licensing Board for your state, and explore any recommendations or provisions the Board may suggest for resolving ethical dilemmas.

In addition, research any relevant laws in your state that may be relevant to your identified issue.

In your paper discuss what you did- or did not- find for your specific state.

Provide examples to support your findings.
