Seminar Questions ( Answer all):

1. Describe what it means to “do gender”.

2. Look around our virtual classroom, your workplace, or think back to your last family gathering. In what ways are your classmates and instructor, coworkers, manager, and patrons/clients, or relatives doing gender?

3. What social sanctions occur when someone does not do gender according to social norms? In what ways has this changed historically?

Kind Reminder:

integrate 1 or more sociological concepts from the current and/or previous chapters/modules we have already covered. Making connections among various ideas shows deep learning!

Seminar Rules

Consider these questions as you compose your write-up (these questions serve as categories for the grading rubric).

– Is the information accurate?

– Is your post relevant to the topic under discussion?

– Does your post answer the guiding questions?

2. Reminders from the Socratic Seminar Directions and FAQs:

a. State your claim and support it with evidence or examples from the shared reading, video, or podcast.

b. Raise critical questions.

c. Explain your answers–a simple yes or no is not acceptable. You must explain.

d. You must raise at least 1 point and reply to at least 1 other student on the same topic.

e. When replying to a classmate address them by their name and use phrases. (i.e.  agree with Vanessa because . . . . OR  disagree with Vanessa because . . . )

f. Your comment to a classmate is graded. Include substantive content and apply the same rigor in your comment to a classmate as you would in your initial write-up.

g. Support your statements with textual evidence (include quotes and specific page numbers).

Describe the different relevant social groups that use that technology, and how each of their perceptions of that technology differ (or where they are the same).

This is meant for a tiny discussion post so the prompt only really needs to be a paragraph.

Ensure the questions to the prompt are answered. attaching the two articles that are referenced. Again, doesn’t need to be overly detailed

Prompt:
Choose any technology that you interact with on a regular basis and discuss how it contains elements of interpretative flexibility (defined in the Pinch and Bijker reading from Thursday wk1, as well as in the Kline and Pinch reading from Tuesday wk2).

Describe the different relevant social groups that use that technology, and how each of their perceptions of that technology differ (or where they are the same).

For the choosing of any technology i suggest maybe a cell phone?

Research Paper Assignment

Your assignment:
For this assignment you will need to select an issue from modules 5 – 7. You will need to complete a research paper on the topic you select so be sure it is one that interests you.

It will be wise to research sample research papers and formatting outlines to obtain an idea of what a research paper looks like. It would also be best to start looking for research on the topic before finalizing which issue you will select for your paper to make sure you are able to find enough current reliable data.

A good research paper includes enough information on an issue without a biased approach. You will need to summarize the thoughts of the authors, as well as tie the essay back to other current research that you have found.

You will need to cite a minimum of three sources, in addition to your textbook. You should use the research you find to present the readers with a general idea or background on the issue, as well as to validate or disprove the writings in the text.

You should also present the advantages and disadvantages of the issue. Keep in mind, this is not a persuasive assignment so you will not need to pick one side and argue for it. You are simply informing your reader on the issue for this assignment.

You will not need to include an abstract but you will be required to include a cover page in APA format.

Limit your paper to 1500-1600 words. You must use APA style; use appropriate grammar and organizational elements to submit your analysis.

You must use a MINIMUM OF THREE outside sources in addition your textbook and cite in APA. Third person and short concise sentences are expected. (the outside sources can come from the internet but academic ones are preferred)

This research paper requires that you gather data published by experts in the field and present your findings in the form of a research paper.

Failure to do so will result in penalties because not giving credit to original authors can be considered a form of plagiarism.

Points regarding citing your sources and giving credit to original authors:

• If you do not have a reference page attached, your paper will not be accepted.

• If you have a reference page attached but ALL of the sources listed are not referenced in your paper at least one time, your paper will not be accepted.

• If you include a reference page but either do not utilize the number of sources required, or do not refer to all the sources on your reference page, there will be a minimum of a 20 pt penalty, or more, or your paper will possibly still not be accepted.

Why are Blacks dying at higher rates from COVID-19?

Response by Natalia Perez

Rashawn Ray’s article, “Why are Blacks dying at higher rates from Covid-19,” explains and demonstrates the causes of why black community is dying from Covid-19 in a higher rate than any other race. The main cause of these higher rates are health disparities which can be based on how communities are raised by.

In which I mean that the black community has “less” resources such as “healthy food options, green spaces, recreational facilities, lighting, and safety.” In addition, many black people do have jobs, such as Ray states, where they can be janitors, food services, bus drivers, retail stores, etc. The aftermath of when the lockdown started caused many of them to lose jobs and having to work through the pandemic to gain some money.

As read from Golash-Boza’s reading, institutional racism is a form of racism where there is any racial inequalities in any institution/organization. It can be shown/set through any political, educational, economical, health, and any more kind of institutions.

In Dr.Ray’s article, he states that criminalization is one of the causes of health disparities which can also be seen as an example of institutional racism. There is a huge imbalance in the criminal system in black communities. It is extremely horrible. Dr.Ray explains a situation where currently, during a pandemic, black men are “coincidentally” getting stopped because they look suspicious from wearing masks. There was even a case where a police officer started to cough on a black person just for their pleasure.

It has been seen many times where police are racially profiling a black person and being rude to them in any kind of way. The criminal system has been a disappointment to the black community as seen throughout the years.

When reading Dr.Ray’s article, the sentence that I think summarized the article was when he stated, “I argue structural conditions that inform pre-existing conditions and health disparities are the main culprit for the epidemic within the pandemic which is ravaging Black communities across the U.S.”

He explains the cause in why the Black community is dying which is all these health disparities because of race and how the different communities are brought up. Because of all these differences such as resources and the health inequalities, it is causing the death rates from Covid-19 in the black community to be so high.

Covid-19 caused a worldwide lockdown which sadly took away jobs that caused chaos in the working class and lower class because it was their source of income. Many of these people are parents or have a family in which they are part of the family’s source of money.

Now, many of these people are having hard times to pay rent or even pay for groceries. Thankfully some of these people got stimulus checks but for some it was not enough to pay for simple things. Many people even got to the point of being close to homelessness because they had no money to pay rent. On the other hand, there are still some people who thankfully still have a job but they had to go through the dangers from Covid-19.

They never knew if they would get Covid or not but they had to get through to have some money as support for themselves or families. Although, compared to wealth people, I would think they had it easier because many would have money saved and still have their jobs and would work from home which is a different complete story for the lower class.

In my experience, as someone who is part of the working-class or lower middle class, Covid-19 has had a huge impact in our family. Although we were not left jobless, my parents are working more than usual (overtime everyday). I was scared that my parents would get Covid-19 but they had to go to work to support the family because if they did not work, we would sadly not be where we are now.

How do the academic institutions have attended fit within larger social and political forces operating in society?

Social theory

One goal of social Theory is to illuminate connections between our individual experience and social processes.  would like you to do is to write an essay that shows how to apply some of the sociological theories we have learned this semester to analyze social forces and processes affecting and affected by your goal of earning a college degree . We’ve encountered lots of ideas about how social forces operate in society. This is your opportunity to show that you can apply sociological insights to make sense of how what and why you study in college affects and is affected by social processes large and small.

In the spirit of multiperspectival theorizing,Use three different sociological theorists to illuminate potential connections between your experiences seeking a college degree and the larger social processes that have been unfolding around you (in the past and/or the present).

What social processes would each theorist highlight? Be sure to pay attention to what the theorist would have to say about social influences unfolding at the micro- and macro-level.

Choose one theorist from each of the three groups listed below and present how she or he would tend to view social influences affecting and affected by your pursuit of a college degree. Some questions that might be relevant to your thinking about this are:

What social forces shape the content of my studies?

How do the academic institutions have attended fit within larger social and political forces operating in society?

How might what  have or am studying affect my own psychological processes and/or relationships with others?

Who benefits from the the way higher education is organized?

Who is hurt by this organization? These are just questions to get you thinking about how some of the theorists in the lists below might analyze your experience as a learner in this environment.

There are many others that may occur to you…just use the ones that you find most appropriate to each theorist you choose to write about.

Draw upon what we have covered in our discussions, the readings, and the posted instructor’s comments. Be sure to properly cite any quoted and/or paraphrased material drawn from these sources. There is no need to bring in additional sources.

USE theorist from EACH of the following groups (your essay will thus cover three theorists):

Patricia Hill Collins

Harriet Martineau

Dorothy Smith

you need to write about the perspectives of ONE theorist from EACH group. Every semester, someone makes the mistake of writing about three theorists from the same group… don’t let this be you.

Focus your argument to ensure that your answer does not exceed 1200 words (about five double-spaced pages using 12 point font). make sure to maintain the paragraph formatting when you enter your answer.

What steps does it follow as it is applied? Where did it originate, and on what or whose authority?

Identify a policy or rule in your school, job, or personal situation.

Where did it originate, and on what or whose authority?

What steps does it follow as it is applied?

Are there unintended consequences of the Policy?

Who is directly affected?

Who is indirectly affected?

Does the actual impact reflect the original goal?
